Per Ben Howland’s press conference today, James Keefe will redshirt this season.
POW Analysis: We really aren’t that worried about the news, and believe this could be a blessing in disguise under one condition: that none of our bigs gets hurt during the season.Given the depth of the backcourt (Collison, The Animal Westbrook, Luc, Shipp, and Roll), the Bruins can easily fill the SF spot. This gives us 4 players (Aboya, Luc, Love, and Mata Fo Real) for the PF and C positions. And frankly, Keefe was not going to see time at the C spot (Love will get 30 min per game, Mata probably around 10 min), nor was he going to see more than 10 minutes a game period at any position. With the flexibility of playing any 2 of the 4 bigs at one time gives the Bruins enough beef to dominate inside. Can you name another team with 5 or even 4 quality bigs in college basketball this season? I can’t. And briefly thinking about the past few years, I can’t remember a single college national champion having more than ONE key big man off the bench. I love how Aboya has been playing this year, and I believe Mata should be getting more time as it is. Also, the Keefe redshirt will give Luc more playing time at the 4 which will better utilize his greatest strengths. One drawback to this news is that in 2009 and 2010, assuming we get the Wear twins, that will give the Bruins THREE , yes THREE 6′10″ ish white , perimeter oriented power forwards. That is like being a director and having Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Lindsay Lohan star in your summer blockbuster movie. Translation: it would be better if we could get a beast inside to compliment them.
